Last Class of the Semesterです。

This Monday is the last day of class for my first semester of learning Japanese. The class has been challenging, but really interesting and really enjoyable. Its been great getting to meet everyone in my class and getting to know them well. I feel like the people in my class are some of the people at Columbia that I know best. It has been really fun and as a class everyone has been able to help each other learn better. I hope everyone stays in touch. Hamada sensei has also been great. It is a bummer that the class is ending, but I cannot wait for next semester! I look forward to meeting some new people in my class next semester, and continuing this enjoyable journey of learning Japanese.

G-CANS Project or Shutoken Gaikaku Housui Ro

This is the Main Holding Tank for Japan's G-CANS project. It is an underground infrastructure in Tokyo built to prevent overflow in the city's major waterways and rivers during rain and typhoon seasons. Construction was started in 1992, and it consists of 5 concrete silos, and this main holding tank. It is a modern engineering marvel, and is just one of many large scale engineering project Japan has finished or is currently working on. The Japanese government invests a lot more into public works and projects like these than the American government does. They give guided tours in both English and Japanese if you go during a season where the tanks are not currently in use. I saw a piece about it on the show "Cities of the Underground: Tokyo" on the History Channel. When I visit Japan in the future, this is definitely something i will want to go see and tour (^_^)

これわVelonica

これわVelonica by AQUA TIMEZ.

Hello everyone. This is the newest opening for Bleach, one of my favorite anime. Bleach just finished a filler arc and is now back on the main arc, much to everyone's enjoyment. Arcs in anime are the current storyline they happen to be on. Bleach is an anime that is originally a manga, and since bth are still active, filler arcs occur when the producers of the show decide that the anime is catching up too mcuh to the manga, and so they create a side story that is not in the manga in order to let the manga get ahead again. Filler stories are usually pretty lame, and annoy fans because it keeps them waiting on what happens in the all important main arc, the main storyline. For this reason, many fans prefer reading the manga, so that they can avoid these fillers. I usually enjoy the anime better however, so I sit through them. Some of the ones for Bleach have actually been pretty interesting, but this last one was pretty bad. So when the main arc finally began again, and it was signaled by a new opening song by my favorite band AQUA TIMEZ, I felt the need to share it with you all ^_^ enjoy!

This is an opening from my favorite anime, Bleach, or in Japan, (Burīchi). It is an anime that is now on its 189th episode, and I am not sure whether to be proud that I have seen all of them =P I also like to watch other animes, including Code Geass:Lelouch of the Rebellion, Kōdo Giasu: Hangyaku no Rurūshu (子小戸ぎあす:はんぎゃくのるるうしゅ), Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Kidō Senshi Gandamu Daburu-ō (きどおせんしがんだむばうる00), and s-cry-ed, Sukuraido (すくらいど). Anime was a springboard for me into Japanese culture.

This song is by my favorite Japanese Band, Aqua Timez It is a band I first started listening to when I heard one of their songs on Bleach, and I really enjoy all of their music. This one is my favorite. They also have a new single coming out on October 1st (^_^) I am very excited.

Why I Chose to Study Japanese

Over the last few years I have developed a great interest in Japanese culture. I began to read books on the history and culture of Japan, and well as books on modern Japan. I also enjoy watching anime. I want to learn Japanese in hopes of possibly studying abroad in Tokyo my junior year, or to just visit their later in life, perhaps even working there for a time.

I have really enjoyed learning the language thus far. It is challenging, but I also am very happy to be learning it after wanting to do so for many years, and am thoroughly enjoying it. The hardest part for me currently is memorizing all the Hiragana. I am excited about continuing to learn more of the language, and learning Katakana and Kanji so that I can read things in Japanese. It is challenging, but I am really happy to be learning Japanese.
